Allow me to share my day with you.

Today, my friend, Mindy, and I went to Little 5 Points in Atlanta to take some pictures. For any of you who haven’t been to this part of the city, it’s full of graffiti, unique architecture, and some of the most visually interesting people you will ever see.

While we were there, we ran into Linda & Digger. Two homeless folks who posted up & pan handled around Little 5 on the regular. We ended up sitting down with them over slices of pizza & sweet tea to talk and hear their stories.

Here’s what we learned.

Linda was from Fulton County, Georgia. She went to nursing school and used to own a farm. She loves to write books & has a God given talent to speak & relate to total strangers. Her single heart loves like three, and it shows in everything she does.

Digger is from North Carolina. He’s one of 18 children. He owns land up North, but gave it to his brother out of the kindness of his heart. He’s content with where he is and finds peace in knowing that Jesus is his Lord and Savior.

While talking to these two individuals, I couldn’t help but notice that every time a stranger walked by, they would wave and cheerfully say “have a good day,” without expecting anything in return. They were so eager to pour their love on others, as well as their wisdom and knowledge on us. It felt as if we were the one’s being blessed with their presence rather than the other way around.

Digger was full of advice and uplifting words and Linda had such a way of connecting with Mindy and me, it almost felt like she had known us for years. The way she tuned into my behavior & the way I spoke, brought tears to my eyes. The amount of care & concern she had for us was, for lack of a better word, amazing. How two people, who have next to nothing, can be so loving & giving to those around them blew my mind.

After the pizza & sweet tea were gone, we said our goodbyes and walked away. As Mindy and I headed towards our next destination, I felt like a weight had been lifted from my shoulders. Like someone had pressed a “restart” button on my heart. Suddenly, all of the small problems and simple stresses around me seemed so insignificant. I felt foolish for focusing on such selfish things.

It was a beautiful experience. And a humbling one, at that.

All this to say…

If you’re still reading this, I encourage you to take a moment out of every day to help & serve others. You never know what you may get in return.

My friend Anna and I went to Little 5 Pts today to love on some of our homeless neighbors. We ran into these two beautiful souls in the backside of the Vortex parking lot.

I felt more blessed and fed just by sitting and listening to their stories and wisdom pour out then the pizza and sweet tea could have possibly even done for them. Linda was born and raised in Fulton County and Digger is from North Carolina. The amount of love and concern for both Anna and I was unreal. One of their first questions was if we were “spiritual”… then asking more specifically if we were Christians, to which we answered a resounding yes. She asked me to open up eyes so she could look into them for a moment… a minute later she spoke such wisdom and was so poignant that I began to cry. I was amazed at how the Lord had so gifted her with speaking into people’s lives. Anyone she encounters and that takes the time to sit with her receives the same love and discerning words.

Who have you served today?

Take a moment to sit down with someone. You’d be surprised at the one who ends up being blessed.

perfectingtheart:
